Privacy Policy

Who we are

CarbonZero Sagl, 6998 Tresa, Switzerland, is responsible for the personal data described here. For any question about it, or to exercise any of your rights, write to us through our contact page.

What data we may collect, and why

• Your account. Your email address and the name you provide, to allow you to log in to your account and manage your data.
• Donations. The amount, the date, whether it repeats, your email address, and the reference number our payment provider sends us for any recurring donation. We keep these to thank you, to provide a record of your donations, and to allow you to cancel a recurring donation through your account with us. Your credit card or bank account details are only handled by our payment providers.
• The Climate Patrons page. Your first name and photo are only shown on our Climate Patrons page if you choose to add them through your account on CarbonZero. You can use any acceptable photo to represent your support and presence to our climate project founders as their patron. You can remove or change the photo or your name at any time, and any removed photo will be deleted from our server. The name and photo you choose for this page will not be used for any other purpose.
• Sponsoring CarbonZero. A sponsor is a company that helps to fund CarbonZero's efforts to promote the projects in its portfolio. We retain the company's name, address, logo and website address, along with the name, email address and phone number of its contact persons. We use this data for our financial records, to maintain contact with our sponsors, and to display the company on our Corporate Sponsors page.
• The newsletter. Your name and email address, to send you an occasional newsletter about our climate projects and their founders. Every issue will have an unsubscribe link within it, and you can subscribe to or unsubscribe from our newsletter through your account on CarbonZero.
• Submitting a climate project. We retain your replies to our submission form, the details regarding your organisation, and the documents you attach, so that we can ensure your project meets our requirements before approving it to be featured on our crowdfunding platform. Once your project is approved, any details you enter into your project page to be publicly shared with potential donors will be retained, whether you choose to publish them immediately or not. When your team signs the Update Pledge, we record who signed it and when. We also keep notes about each project, and a record of our decisions and the reasons for them.
• Messages and meeting requests. If you schedule a meeting with us, your name, email address and company details, and your phone number if you provide it, will be saved to our server. We use this data to reply to you and prepare for any subsequent discussion. A message sent through our contact page is emailed to us.

We do not sell your data, show advertising, or track you with analytics.

Cookies

We use one functional cookie. It keeps you logged in, and it carries a donation through our payment provider and back to our thank-you page. Since it is strictly functional, we do not ask for your consent. It expires when you close your browser, or after 30 days if you tick the box to keep you logged in. We use no advertising or tracking cookies.

Who else handles your data

These service providers handle your data only on our behalf, under a contract with us:

• Hetzner hosts our website and database in Germany, so your data is stored within the EU and protected by EU data protection law.
• Resend (USA) sends our emails and keeps a copy of each for 30 days. Your data is protected by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and by standard contractual clauses approved by the EU and Switzerland.
• Anthropic (USA) runs an automated scan of names and photos to ensure they are appropriate. Anthropic deletes these within 30 days, unless its safety systems flag them, and does not use them to train its models. Your data is protected by standard contractual clauses approved by the EU and Switzerland.

These are responsible for your data themselves, under their own privacy policies:

• PayPal processes donations, under its own privacy policy. The PayPal company responsible for your data is the one serving the country where you live.
• YouTube (Google) and Vimeo are used to display videos on our website. We ask both to limit tracking, through YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode and Vimeo's "do not track" setting. When you play a video served by one of these companies, they receive your IP address and device information and handle them under their own privacy policies.

Any change to our service providers will be shown on this page, with the date of the change.

How long we keep your data

Donation records: for as long as you have an account with us, and at least as long as is legally required of us. Your name and photo on the Climate Patrons page: until you remove them. Your account: until you close it, in which case we will delete any record that relates to you personally, such as your name and contact information, while retaining all records we are required by law to keep, such as records of financial transactions. In the case of a contact person of an active project organisation or sponsor, we require at least one contact person and will keep their personal data for as long as the project or sponsorship is active. Project submissions and approved project data hosted on our platform: permanently. We keep them as a record of every project that CarbonZero has hosted.

Your rights

If you are one of our Climate Patrons, you can, in your account, change your name, email address and photo, see your donations, stop a repeating donation, view the personal information we retain about you, and close your account at any time. If you are a team member of a project or a contact person for a sponsor, you can view or correct your personal information in your account, and may be able to delete your account if or when it becomes unnecessary to the project or sponsorship. You can also ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, or ask us to correct, delete or restrict it. You can contact us via our contact form if you object to how we use the personal data we retain about you, and we will reply as soon as possible, at the latest within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can file a complaint with the Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner, or with the data protection authority in your EU country.

Changes

If we change this policy, we will publish the new version here with its date.
